A Disclaimer on Dialect Recordings
Certain records in the archive contain ‘dialect recordings’ these are any records that feature references to genres such as ‘ethnic character songs,’
and were particularly popular in Vaudeville routines during the late 19th and earlier 20th century, which unfortunately contained negative stereotypes and highly demeaning portrayals of Blacks, Native Americans, Asians, Irish and other ethnic groups, reflecting attitudes and beliefs of that period
in history.
Many will find 'dialect recordings' offensive. Some of these songs were performed by members of the ethnic group, whilst the vast majority were
not, this is most prevalent in the tradition of Blackface where Whites performed caricatured portrayals of Blacks. It is very important to bear in mind
the tragic impact of racism and the lasting affect this has had on peoples lives and sensitivity to this important issue is strongly advised.
These types of recordings available on our site act as an unfiltered window and record of the past and is primarily available to allow the public to
learn and educate themselves through the content to reach a better understanding of past events, therefore to exclude any records would create
a less complete, more distorted view of history and also run the risk of omitting the unsung performers, artists, composers and inventors that have
made contributions particularly when referring to those of African descent or from other ethnicities. Please be aware that there will be content
on here that will be very challenging for some and individual listening discretion is recommended. We hope that the audio provided may also
help draw attention to particular issues that are still affecting our communities today, actuating further open and inclusive discussions thereafter.
